Portrait Painting Process

Portrait painting process usually starts with discussion about client’s thoughts regarding portrait purpose, the subject and possible scene set up. We are trying to figure out together the best way to convey subject personality.

Second step is a photo session. Discussed scene is set up and subject is sited. I take a large number of shots and do a color study for 1-2 hours, so the session might take a few hours.

Next step is photo composite. I create a photo version of the future portrait and send it to the client for approval. Once the photo composite is approved, preliminary work for painting is done. At this moment I require 30% of the payment.

Painting stage of the process might take up to 6 months. I prefer to have a 2-3 hour live session mid process.

I present client an almost finished portrait for review and comments. After this session I expect second 30% of the payment.

We schedule another 2-3 hours live session to make sure details that a photograph might not reflect would be in the painting. At this point painting is considered done and the rest of the payment is required. Once the portrait is fully paid, it is available for pick up.
